“The addition of two PondHawk solar powered aerators to our irrigation lake last year has made a tremendous difference. In just a short amount of time our pond is healthier with less surface algae growth and a clearer appearance. We have been able to reduce chemical applications to the irrigation lake saving time and resources. We have also seen a decrease in algal growth on our greens due to the better-quality water we can now apply to the turfgrass. Utilizing a solar powered system, without drawing any power from the electric grid, allows our course to enhance our environmental programs as well."

Bear Trace at Harrison Bay, part of the Tennessee State Parks golfing portfolio, was designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. Since its inception, the course has attracted golf enthusiasts from all over, eager to experience its meticulously crafted layout. However, what truly sets Bear Trace apart is its dedication to preserving and enhancing the natural environment.

Meeting the Superintendent: Paul Carter, CGCS

During our recent visit to Bear Trace, we met Superintendent Paul Carter, a Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and a passionate advocate for sustainable golf course management. Under his leadership, Bear Trace has implemented numerous eco-friendly initiatives, ensuring that the course remains a sanctuary for wildlife and a green oasis for golfers. Bear Trace has been designated a Groundwater Guardian Green Site which has eliminated pollution in groundwater runoff.

PondHawk Installation: A Decade of Progress

As part of our 10-year celebration of PondHawk’s first installation, we visited Bear Trace to witness the incredible progress made over the years. In 2023, the staff at Bear Trace installed two PondHawk systems on the course’s irrigation lake. The goal was clear: enhance the overall health of the aquatic ecosystem and improve the quality of the water delivered to the turf.

Environmental Impact and Future Goals

The installation of the PondHawk systems has significantly improved water quality in the irrigation lake, a critical resource for maintaining Bear Trace’s lush greens and fairways. The PondHawk systems work efficiently, harnessing solar power to aerate the water, thus reducing the harmful effects of stagnant water while promoting a healthier aquatic environment.

Mr. Carter’s commitment to environmental stewardship extends beyond water quality. Bear Trace was recognized twice for the Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award, in 2009 and 2012. The course is a proud member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, striving to protect the game’s natural heritage while ensuring that the environment remains a priority.
