Stormwater basins frequently face challenges with harmful algal blooms (HABs), low dissolved oxygen, poor circulation, and foul odors. These issues negatively impact aquatic ecosystems and public health, both locally and downstream. A key consideration has always been whether surface or subsurface aeration, used independently or alongside other stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs), can effectively revive the natural processes required to enhance water quality in struggling lakes and ponds.
This session presents practical, field-tested aeration strategies from leading environmental scientists with a decade of field research testing, evaluating, and designing solar-powered aeration systems.
Attendees will gain expert insights on:
- How to identify causes of low dissolved oxygen, algae blooms, and odor.
- An evaluation of different aeration method options, focusing on energy requirements, infrastructure needs, total lifecycle costs, and off-grid solar solutions to quantify their value in enhancing water quality.
- Case studies (from varying counties across the US) detailing the science behind PondHawk aeration and the tools used to validate customer experience and improvement results.

Join us on October 22, 2026, for Lunch and Learn with the Center for Watershed Protection (CWP) and discover how solar-powered aeration is bringing biological balance and improved water quality to different watersheds across the country.
